December 2023 Successful Social Day for Johannesburg Members After the disappointment of last year when we were unable to hold our annual social day and lunch, this year proved to be the feast after the famine. We returned to Bryanston Sports Club and 28 people joined us for a full mornings tennis and a further four came to the lunch. For a morning of “social” tennis, there were plenty of keenly played mens, ladies and mixed matches throughout the morning which proved to be one of the hottest of the year so far. What was pleasing was the fact that a far younger crowd attended this year than previously and hopefully this will be the catalyst for future IC days here. During lunch, which again was again excellent as we have come to expect from Pat and his team, chairman Mike Dunk gave a resume of the year. During his talk he called upon Rene Plant and Rosanne Duke to give the members an overview of their participation in the La Coretta cup which they won in Belgium. Mike then asked Terrey Schweitzer to give a report back on our participation in the IC Rod Laver Worldwide junior challenge finals for which South Africa represented the African continent with Terrey as the manageress/coach to the team. The highlight for the four kids who played was the meeting with Rod Laver himself. Despite the fact that the kids are too young to have had the pleasure of seeing Rod Laver play, they were made well aware of his achievements in the game. It was a tough competition for the kids to play in not being used to that level of tennis but the experienced they gained will hopefully hold them in good stead for the future. As there were a number of new members Mike then presented Maureen Boys, Annamarie Lotz, Karen Steenkamp and Lisa Wade with their IC SA scarves and Brian Colby, Chris Sochanski and Bruce Tyson with their IC ties. Once again it proved to be an ideal way to round off the year for the club and we look forward to more inter action with members during 2024.
